Education of Healthcare Professionals

While providing services to children and adults with disabilities at UCP, the Health and Wellness Program is also taking the lead in the education of healthcare professionals.  Health and Wellness programming at UCP is a valuable resource to healthcare professional programs, providing an opportunity for students to have experience with hands-on treatment of persons with disabilities during their training, resulting in a greater chance they will include these patients in their private practice.  Education of healthcare professionals allows us to reach beyond the treatment provided at UCP of Greater Birmingham, and have a greater impact on provision of healthcare to persons with disabilities in communities throughout Alabama.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Children with special needs will receive comprehensive and coordinated care through UCP's Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Program. Partnerships include PMR residents from UAB Hospital, medical students through UAB School of Medicine and nursing students from Samford University.

DENTAL CLINIC

UCP’s adult program participants receive dental care at LINCPoint’s on-site dental clinic.   Through a partnership with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Dentistry, dental services provided include:

  • prophylactic services
  • composite fillings
  • restorations
  • operatives
  • simple extractions

OPTOMETRY CLINIC

LINCPoint's Optometry Clinic is held every Friday and staffed by students and faculty from the UAB School of Optometry.  Eye exams are designed specifically for individuals with a disability and are quite extensive, requiring between 45 and 90 minutes on average.  Individuals can have an eye exam and prescription written if needed, and they can also order glasses at the same time.  The LINCPoint Optometry Clinic also provides outreach services to Jefferson County and Birmingham City School Systems' special education students, as well as other individuals who are in need of service.

Health Services Training Project

The Health Services Training Project, a collaborative program of United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, presents six new video training modules designed to provide valuable information and training to individuals with disabilities and health care providers.
