Outstanding Program Partner Award

GP Harmon Recycling

Georgia-Pacific is one of the world's leading manufacturers of tissue, pulp, paper, packaging, building products and related chemicals with approximately 300 manufacturing facilities across North America, South America and Europe, ranging from large pulp, paper and tissue operations to gypsum plants, box plants and building products complexes. As a corporation, Georgia-Pacific is also committed to supplier diversity, providing opportunities for minority, women and disabled-owned businesses to compete for their business on a fair and even basis.  And through their second tier initiative, Georgia-Pacific's contracted suppliers are encouraged to support supplier diversity initiatives and their awarded contracts by making every effort to subcontract to diverse businesses.

In 2006 United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham began their partnership with GP Harmon Recycling with the opening of its Gone for Good Secure Document Destruction business.  Over the past three years, this partnership has helped Gone for Good grow into the business that it is – recycling over 2 million pounds of paper in 2009.  GP Harmon Recycling helped Gone for Good secure a contract with the National Archives in Washington, D.C. which brought in over $25,000 in business last year, resulting in increase job opportunities for the adults with disabilities UCP serves.

GP Harmon Recycling is one of Gone for Good and UCP of Greater Birmingham’s strongest advocates.  Their commitment to supplier diversity continues to help UCP of Greater Birmingham in our efforts to provide meaningful employment opportunities – and paychecks – for people with disabilities.  Because of Georgia-Pacific, UCP of Greater Birmingham was able to pay over $70,000 in wages to individuals in our program this past year.

GP Harmon Recycling understands that creating jobs for people with disabilities is a smart business decision.  They are leader in their field and their commitment to diversity inspires others to invest in the lives of people with disabilities and, for this, we are proud to honor them with our Outstanding Program Partner Award.
